Bye Bye Hypermart
After sitting vacant for over a decade the old Hypermart on Garland Road was purchased by the City.
Demolition of the old building has been completed and that several acre parcel is now ready for redevelopment. Maybe one of Garland’s major manufacturers, like Kraft Foods, could make our dreams of a convention center become a reality. The “Kraft Convention Center” has a nice ring.
At the July 10 City Council meeting, Councilman Rich Aubin was recognized for the key role he played in the acquisition of the Hypermart property. He had flung a sledgehammer into a wall of the building to signal the beginning of its demolition. He was presented with a sledgehammer mounted on wood in appreciation for his efforts.
