Cotton’s Produce Celebrates 40th

South Garland has been blessed with the fresh produce stand at the corner of Broadway and Rosehill for four decades! Cotton’s Produce has provided restaurants and retail customers with fresh fruits and veggies, thanks to the tireless efforts of Cotton and Rose Messick. In the darkness of early morning hours Cotton leaves his Garland home and drives to the farmers’ market in downtown Dallas. He loads his truck and begins his deliveries six days a week, but “Never on the Lord’s day.”

The produce stand opens at 6:30 am and closes at 5:30 pm. That’s a long day and must seem especially long during the hot summer months, because the stand has no air conditioning. Rose and her daughter, Belinda, mind the store and offer old fashioned customer service.

Rose will offer cooking tips and both she and Belinda will always offer to help carry out your purchases. Cotton’s Produce carries eggs, an array of nuts and seeds, a line of Watkin’s Products and a variety of jams and jellies.

This time of year there are also flowering plants and potted herbs available. In recent years Cotton’s Produce has closed from late December until March 1. Customers and neighbors always wait anxiously for their annual reopening. May 1 will mark their 40th anniversary across from the carwash, on Rosehill Road (facing out to Broadway).
