Downtown Garland Celebrates Fall…

Halloween in 3 Parts…

Several fall events took place in and around the downtown area of Garland, beginning with 3 days of Halloween celebrations. There was a lot of spooky stuff taking place at Trims & Treasures on Main Street during the 29th, treats and on(stage performances at the Intrinsic Brew Pub on State Street on the 30th and Witches & Wine at the Generator on Sixth Street on Halloween night. We were quite surprised to find the entire downtown square area in total darkness except for the light from the Generator on Halloween night. quite a few witches did congregate at the coffee house, turned bistro, to enjoy complimentary wine and schmooze  (as witches tend to do) with their affable host, Nir Sela.

Great Bargains at Preservation Garland Auction…

Preservation Garland had a fundraising auction on the site of the Tinsley/Lyles House on Saturday, November 6th. Members and friends of that organization were joined by members of Altrusa International, who conducted their own bake sale.  The Garland Noon Exchange Club decorated the area with their flags and were prepared to conduct a bean bag toss for the kids attending the old time, live auction. Auctioneer Mike Gaston did a great job of keeping things upbeat and lively, though attendance was very sparse. We were quite disappointed that only a dozen or so bidders showed up to to bid on the 50 or so donated items being offered. Preservation Garland members were conspicuous

in their absence, leaving their president, Cleo Holden, to prevail over the auction nearly single handedly.  Those who did participate in the auction wound up with some great deals. There were many high quality items sold for very low bids. Items ranged from a brand new Stetson , to a set of blue willow china  and a quail hunting trip.

When all was said and done Preservation Garland had netted a mere $1,400.  Proceeds from the sale will go toward the restoration  of the  Tinsley/Lyles House, Ca 1870, located at 399 N. Seventh Street, which is between the central library and the DART tracks, in an area now known as Heritage Crossing. The Santa Fe Depot, which houses the Landmark Museum ,and an old Pullman railcar are also located there.

Generator Coffee House  becomes a bistro…

The Generator Coffee House has evolved into a bistro  now serving beer and wine. The exposed brick walls adorned with art exhibits and warm wood flooring create a rustic , comfortable and clubby atmosphere.  Event planner Juanita Lopez saw something more in the appealing interior. She envisioned its potential as an event venue for celebrations of all sorts, including weddings. At 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, the place closed at the end of its normal business day. By 6 p.m. it had been completely transformed by Lopez, and had become an elegant, candle-lit venue, suitable for any important celebration. Lopez, operating as JL Events, invited several other members of the industry to participate in the Open  House. A limo company sent an impeccably detailed 66 Caddy convertible to create some curb appeal for the event. Cake bakers and caterers distributed samples of their wares and complimentary wine was available to all, friends and industry members alike, All who attended the affair were blown away by the elegant ambience created by Lopez, and that includes Generator owner, Nir Sela. It was truly awesome! and from now on we’ll think of Juanita Lopez as, “The Transformer”.
