Garland Libraries Host Perot Museum Tech Truck

Tech-savvy tweens and teens can celebrate Teen Tech Week with visits from the Perot Museum’s Tech Truck at two Garland Libraries this March.

The Tech Truck is a mobile extension of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The truck, which is outfitted with technological gadgets and equipment like 3-D printers and laser cutters, visits community centers and libraries to give participants a hands-on experience with STEAM technology.

The Tech Truck will offer attendees creative, scientific, and maker-based activities. The truck will visit the South Garland Branch Library on March 7, at 6:30 p.m. and the North Garland Branch Library on March 14, also at 6:30 p.m. Both events are free of charge, though registration is required and limited to 30 tweens and teens ages 10 to 17. Registration begins two weeks before each event at the location where the event will be held.

Kindness Rocks at the Garland Library

Children of all ages and their families may participate in the Kindness Rocks Project at the North Garland Branch Library this Spring Break. Kindness Rocks promotes random acts of kindness by encouraging participants to decorate rocks with positive sayings and then leave the rocks in random spots for people to find.

The Library’s Kindness Rocks maker event will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at the North Garland Branch Library. Attendees will use oil-based paint markers to decorate their rocks with positive sayings and images. Finished rocks may be taken at the end of the event to be left in a place of the participant’s choosing.

Garland Police Officer Teaches Preschoolers about Community Helpers at Garland Library

Preschoolers ages three to five can learn about community helpers and meet a real Garland police officer at the North Garland Branch Library’s Preschool Storytime—Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m.

Children attending this event will learn about what police officers do and how they help people in the community. The officer will read a book to the kids, then give them a tour of a patrol car. The children will also get to make their own police caps.

Families Can Enjoy A Free Movie at the Library

Bring a blanket and attend a free movie with your family. The Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Walnut Creek Branch Library is showing The Boss Baby at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15.

In Boss Baby, seven-year-old Tim Templeton has a great life until the unexpected arrival of his new brother, the Boss Baby. Tim resents his suit-wearing, briefcase-carrying brother until a scheme involving the head of Puppy Co. compels the brothers to join forces. The movie is rated PG.

Doors open 15 minutes prior to the event. Seating is limited. No registration is required, and all ages may attend these events. Refreshments are available while supplies last.

Teens Face Off on Mario Kart at Garland Library

Teen gamers ages 13 to 18 are invited to compete against each other in a Mario Kart tournament at the South Garland Branch Library at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 16.

Interested teens will sign in at the South Garland Branch Library and be placed into the tournament bracket. Play will continue until only four players are left. The remaining players will face off in a final race, with this race’s winner being declared the victor of the overall tournament and prize winner.

Kids Watercolor at Garland Library

Children ages 6 through 12 will discover warm and cool colors and use them in a watercolor painting at this month’s Art Explorers event. The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at the Walnut Creek Branch Library.

Children attending Art Explorers learn about different types of art, then develop their STEAM art skills by creating their own masterpieces. Attendees at the March event will learn about warm colors, red; orange; and yellow; and cool colors, blue; green; and purple. They will then create a grid pattern on paper, featuring their choice of an outlined design. The artists will fill the design with either warm or cool watercolors, then use the opposite color scheme on the background.

Registration is required to attend each Art Explorer program and is limited to 24 participants. Registration may be completed by phone or in person at the Walnut Creek Branch Library beginning Saturday, Feb. 16. The Walnut Creek Branch Library is located at 3319 Edgewood Drive, in Garland. Paper Crafting for Adults at Garland Library

Adults can learn iris folding, a paper craft using layered, folded strips of paper at the Garland Library’s next adult craft workshop. The workshop will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the South Garland Branch Library.

Each crafting workshop features a unique craft project or art piece. All supplies are provided by the library. Registration is required to attend and is limited to twenty-four participants. Registration will begin Saturday, March 9. Call 972-205-3931 to register.

Class Act Tap Company Featured at Senior Social Hour

Put on your dancing shoes! The Class Act Tap dancers will tap their way into the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Senior Social Hour on Thursday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Senior Social Hour takes place at the Central Library, 625 Austin Street, in Downtown Garland.

The dancers are part of The Class Act Tap Company, a service organization of 40 women, each over the age of 50. The company members serve North Texas as volunteers by providing tap dancing shows free of charge. The dancers have performed at conventions, civic and charity events, corporate and military functions, and are well known on the Dallas senior entertainment circuit. Their tap routines are set to a variety of musical styles including patriotic, Broadway, and western music.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55 years of age and older. Donations of gently used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale are accepted at the program. No registration is required to attend the event, but seats do fill up quickly. Kids Participate in National Craft Month at Garland Library

Children and families can spend an afternoon doing crafts together in honor of National Craft Month at the South Garland Branch Library on Thursday, March 14 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Craft materials including various types, shapes, and colors of paper, crayons, glue, scissors, and tape will be made available for participants to use in any craft project they can imagine.

Trivia Night—Harry Potter Style

Tweens and teens ages 10 to 17 can take part in a Harry Potter-themed trivia night designed for younger audiences at the Central Library on Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Participants can sign up in teams of two to four beginning Tuesday, Feb. 26. Each team member must be aged 10 or older. The trivia will be presented in the style of the game show Jeopardy®. Each question will be worth a certain dollar amount, with the higher value questions being more difficult. The team with the most “money” at the end of the night will be declared the winner, and each member of the winning team will receive a prize.

Kids Get Lost in Space at Garland Library

Children ages 6 through 12 can learn STEAM concepts while exploring outer space at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Books and Beyond program. The event takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at the Central Library.

Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to monthly themes. Each theme incorporates concepts from STEAM learning: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Children use their imaginations to explore the themes and complete the activities, all while socializing with others their age and having fun.

Attendees at the March event can participate in four space-related activities: building a shelter out of Lego® bricks, making necklaces with beads representing the eight planets of the solar system, learning about phases of the moon using Oreo® cookies, and creating constellation drawings using stickers and pencils.
