Garland Responds to Flash Flooding

The City of Garland is assessing the impact of overnight flash flooding in various parts of the city after receiving almost seven inches of rain overnight.
As of mid-day Friday, sections of Campbell Road, Brand Road, Miles Road, Naaman School Road and Pleasant Valley Road are still closed due to high water, along with Castle Drive between Firewheel Parkway and Hickox Road in Rowlett.
The Fire and Police Departments began responding to vehicles trapped in high water as early as 4 a.m. The Garland Fire Department participated in at least a dozen water rescues from vehicles and homes during the early and late morning hours.
Dozens of homes have been reported damaged by floodwaters so far. City building inspectors are going door-to-door in the area along Glenbrook and Ridgedale Drives between Miller and Centerville Roads, assessing damage to residences and providing homeowners with information to assist with repair and recovery.
Homeowners should take several precautions if flood or water damage has occurred. Make sure the home’s electrical system has been inspected if floodwaters came into the structure. Do not use electrical plugs if water rose up to plug level, even after it has receded. Watch for structural damage to floors and supporting structures. The City of Garland Building Inspection Department is available to inspect such problems and assess the damage. Contact them at 972-205-2300.
Hundreds of Garland Power & Light customers experienced power outages overnight. A few scattered outages remain, but all power should be restored by the end of the day. The City is also assessing damage to City parks, bridges, facilities and other infrastructure. Firewheel Golf Course is closed until waters recede and damage can be assessed.
Additional rainfall is expected Friday and Saturday evenings. Residents should remain alert for potential flash flooding. Never drive into high water, even if a barricade is not present.
