As part of the Summer Reading Program, “Join Our Fantasy Quest—Read!,” the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents special programs for children in June. All programs are free.


Juggler David Slick

Juggler David SlickWatch as juggler David Slick displays amazing feats of juggling while performing humorous routines that are sure to delight audiences. Slick holds a Guinness World Record and has been featured on CBS 11, Fox 4 Good Day, and NBC 5.

Kids Invited to Play Board Games at Garland Library

Looking for an afternoon of fun and games for your kids? Find it at the Afternoon Board Game event held from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 9 and 23, at the Central Library.

The program functions as a drop-in event, where children ages 6 to 12 play various types of board and card games.

Teens Invited to Pitch Perfect Sing Along 

Teens are invited to sing along to Pitch Perfect at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 26 at the North Garland Branch Library.  

Pitch Perfect is a popular musical comedy about a female collegiate a cappella group. The film is rated PG-13. Popcorn and water will be available while supplies last. Attendees will receive scarves similar to the ones worn by the characters in the film.

Doors open 15 minutes prior to the event. Seating is limited. No registration is required, but attendance is limited to teens ages 13 through 18.


Tweens to Design Their Own Coats of Arms at Garland Libraries

Tweens with an interest in medieval times can design their own coats of arms at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Tween Scene. 

Tween Scene is a program series designed for youth ages 10 through 13, consisting of activities related to fun and interesting themes. Participants also receive book recommendations based on each theme. The program takes place twice a month at various library locations on Thursday afternoons and evenings.

The theme for the June Tween Scene programs focuses on knights, dragons, and medieval times. Program attendees will discuss books related to this historical era, then make personalized cardboard shields. The first Tween Scene takes place at 6:30 p.m. on June 11, at the South Garland Branch Library, with the second occurring at 4 p.m. on June 18, at the North Garland Branch Library.

Central Library Welcomes Classical Guitarist

Jacob JohnsonLearn about the history of the lute and guitar and enjoy some music as the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents Jacob Johnson as part of its Summer Performance Series for Adults. Mr. Johnson appears at 2 p.m., on Saturday, June 27, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

Johnson, a classical guitarist and lutenist, has 25 years of experience performing in a wide range of venues, such as the Dallas Museum of Modern Art and Nasher Sculpture Center. His repertoire spans the fifteenth century to the current day and includes many popular songs arranged for solo guitar. For this performance, Mr. Johnson will present a lecture recital in which he discusses the history of the guitar, the lute, and their places in literature. His presentation will include a variety of musical examples.

Central Library Welcomes Jazz Quartet

Matt TolentinoEnjoy an evening of jazz as the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents the Matt Tolentino Band as part of its Summer Performance Series for Adults. The band appears at 7 p.m., on Thursday, June 11, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

Tolentino, a native of Dallas, specializes in popular pre-swing music from the 1895 to 1935 period. He frequently performs at theatres and clubs in Dallas and leads three bands, including the four-piece Matt Tolentino Band; a seven-piece group, The Royal Klobasneks; and an 18-piece foxtrot orchestra, The Singapore Slingers.  For this performance, Tolentino’s four-piece band presents jazz and ragtime music of the 1920s and 30s.

Kids Make Their Own Comics at Garland Library 

Children who enjoy graphic novels have the opportunity to create their own comics at Art Explorers, a monthly program for children ages 6 through 12 presented by the Nicholson Memorial Library System. The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Walnut Creek Branch Library.

Children attending Art Explorers learn about different types of art, then use their new skills to create their own masterpieces. At the June event, participants will learn about graphic novels, then turn their own stories into comic strips.

Registration is required to attend each Art Explorer program and is limited to 24 participants. Registration may be completed by phone or in person at the Walnut Creek Branch Library beginning two weeks prior to each event. The Walnut Creek Branch Library is located at 3319 Edgewood Drive, in Garland. All supplies are provided by the library. From Trash to Treasure:

Teens Make Recycled Crafts at Garland Library

Paper Flower 2Teens are invited to make crafts from recycled items at Recycled Crafts for Teens. The event is open to teens, ages 12 through 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 at the Central Library.

At this event, participants can choose from a variety of projects, such as creating journals and sketchbooks out of cereal boxes, fashioning bracelets or headbands out of old T-shirts, or making flowers out of recycled books. The Library provides all the project materials.

This program is free, and no registration is required to attend. The Central Library is located at 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland. Rose-Mary Rumbley Speaks at Senior Social Hour

Speaker Rose-Mary Rumbley makes another appearance at Senior Social Hour—2 p.m., on Thursday, June 18, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

Rose-Mary RumbleyRumbley, an author and the former head of Dallas Baptist University’s drama department, is a native of Dallas and has performed with Dallas Summer Musicals and Casa Mañana. She now tours the speaking circuit and enjoys researching every topic she presents. For this Senior Social Hour presentation, Rumbley speaks of “twelve things we must not forget.” During the speech, which is specially designed for seniors, Rumbley will encourage audiences to reflect on their life experiences and to think positively.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55 years of age and older. Donations of gently used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted during the program.  No registration is required to attend the event, but seats do fill up quickly. Families Invited to Movie Times at the Library

Bring a blanket and enjoy a free movie with your family. The Nicholson Memorial Library System is hosting multiple family movie times this summer, including two in June.

The first movie time takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at the North Garland Branch Library. The film for the afternoon is The Boxtrolls. The film is rated PG.

The Walnut Creek Branch Library hosts the second film, Mary Poppins, at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, June 19. The movie is rated G.

Doors open 15 minutes prior to each event, and seating is limited. No registration is required, and all ages are welcome to attend the event.
