Kids Create Dot Art at Garland Library 

Children can celebrate International Dot Day and create their own dot art at Art Explorers, a monthly program for children ages 6 through 12 presented by the Nicholson Memorial Library System. The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Walnut Creek Branch Library.

Children attending Art Explorers learn about different types of art, then use their new skills to create their own masterpieces. At the September event, participants will discover the art of Wassily Kandinsky then use circles and squares to create their own versions of Kandinsky’s Squares with Concentric Circles painting.

Registration is required to attend each Art Explorer program and is limited to 24 participants. Registration may be completed by phone or in person at the Walnut Creek Branch Library beginning two weeks prior to each event. The Walnut Creek Branch Library is located at 3319 Edgewood Drive, in Garland. All supplies are provided by the library. Kids Discover Outer Space  at Garland Library’s Books and Beyond 

Children ages 6 through 12 can pretend to be astronauts at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Books and Beyond. The event takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Central Library.

Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to monthly themes. Children use their imaginations to explore those themes and complete activities, all while socializing with others their age and having fun.

At the September program, attendees will learn about astronauts and outer space, then make constellation necklaces, taste astronaut food, and create paper rockets.

No registration is required to attend this free event. Children must be ages 6 through 12 to attend. The Central Library is located at 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland. Friends of the Library Group Announces Fall Book Sale

The Nicholson Memorial Library System‘s Friends organization announces its Fall Book Sale at the South Garland Branch Library. Shoppers may find great bargains on a wide variety of adult and children’s books, fiction and nonfiction, paperback and hardcover, and reference books, as well as puzzles, videos, DVDs, audio books, computer games and more.

Public Book Sale dates are Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The South Garland Branch Library is located at 4845 Broadway Blvd., at Oates Rd., in Garland. Admission to the book sale is free.

On Thursday, Sept. 10, beginning immediately after the 6 p.m. annual membership meeting and lasting until 8:30 p.m., the book sale will be open to Friends members only. Membership forms are available at all Garland library locations during open hours, and at www.nmls.lib.tx.us. To locate the printable form online, click on Library Portal, then Friends of the Library, and finally, click on Membership Form. Those who plan to apply on the day of the annual membership meeting are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early to allow time for the process.

A part of the Library Online, Literary Reference Center provides information on thousands of authors and their works. The resource contains more than 250,000 author biographies; 78,000 poems; 6,000 author interviews; and 35,000 work overviews. Users can also find nearly 100,000 essays of literary criticism, in addition to images of many classic and contemporary authors.

To access Literary Reference Center, go to www.nmls.lib.tx.us and click on Library Portal, then Online Resources. Next click on the Literary Criticism & Author Info subject area and find Literary Reference Center. Enter a Garland library card number and PIN to start researching.

Present a current, correct Texas Driver’s License or ID to apply for a library card at any Garland library location. Patrons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to apply for a library card.

Patsy Cline’s Legend Lives at Senior Social Hour

Experience some of the magic of American song legend Patsy Cline as the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents tribute artist Sherrill Douglas in “Crazy ‘Bout Patsy.”  The Senior Social Hour event will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

A singer and performer for most of her life, Sherrill Douglas is known as the “Voice of Many Faces” and performs tributes to Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Stevie Nicks, in addition to Patsy Cline. Ms. Douglas sings in the original key and style of the musicians she impersonates while appearing in period costume. She has performed in Las Vegas and New York, at countless theaters across the country, and was featured on both Good Morning Texas and Good Morning Tulsa.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55 years of age and older. Donations of gently used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale are accepted during the program. No registration is required to attend the event, but seats do fill up quickly. Tweens Make Friendship Bracelets at Garland Libraries

Tweens can learn about friendship and make bracelets to trade with their pals at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Tween Scene.

Tween Scene is a program series designed for youth ages 10 through 13, consisting of activities related to fun and interesting themes. Participants also receive book recommendations based on each theme. The program takes place twice a month at various library locations on Thursday afternoons and evenings.

At the September Tween Scene events attendees will discuss novels that focus on friendship, then use embroidery floss to make friendship bracelets. The first Tween Scene takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, at the South Garland Branch Library, with the second occurring at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10, at the North Garland Branch Library.
