Tweens Learn about Binary Code at Garland Libraries

Tweens ages 10 to 13 can develop their STEAM technology skills by learning about binary code at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Tween Scene events in March.

Tween Scene is a program series designed for youth ages 10 through 13, which consists of activities related to fun and interesting themes. Participants also receive book recommendations based on each theme. The program takes place twice a month at various library locations on Thursday afternoons and evenings.

Participants at the March events will learn about binary code, a sequence of ones and zeros, and how the order of the ones and zeros affect a sequence’s meaning. Attendees will put this into practice by using colored squares of paper to spell out words of six letters or less in binary. Each letter will have two colors assigned to it, a color for the number one and another color for zero.

The first Tween Scene takes place at 6:30 p.m. on March 1, at the South Garland Branch Library, with the second occurring at 6:30 p.m. on March 8, at the North Garland Branch Library.

Families Can Enjoy A Free Movie at the Library

Bring a blanket and attend a free movie with your family. The Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Walnut Creek Branch Library is showing Despicable Me 3 at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 16.

In Despicable Me 3, former villain Gru is fired from the Anti-Villain League and suffers an identity crisis. Then a mysterious stranger shows up claiming to be Gru’s long-lost twin brother Dru. Dru has a plan for the brothers to team up for one last criminal heist, forcing Gru to decide if he will return to villainy or not. The movie is rated PG.

Doors open 15 minutes prior to the event. Seating is limited. No registration is required, and all ages may attend these events. Refreshments are available while supplies last.

Children Learn to Dance like Moana at the Library

Children of all ages and their families may learn to dance like Disney’s Moana at Luau at the Library this Spring Break. Luau at the Library takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17 at the Central Library.

The luau will feature a dancer from the Grace Hula Dance company dressed like Moana. The dancer will give a thirty-minute demonstration of the art of hula dancing, and then the movie Moana will be shown.

Moana is a full-length animated, children’s movie released in 2016. In the film, the title character sets out on a journey across the Pacific Ocean to rid her island of a terrible curse. The movie is rated PG. The first 48 children to arrive at the event will receive a free lei.

Families can enjoy free movies that celebrate diversity at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s South Garland Branch Library this spring.

The next event in the program series, Let’s Go to the Movies, will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 3 p.m. and consists of a screening of Mulan in honor of Women’s History Month. In Mulan a young Chinese maiden goes to war in her father’s place and, unexpectedly, becomes one of the country’s greatest heroines. The film is rated G.

All films in this series are full-length children’s movies. Doors open 15 minutes prior to the events. Seating is limited. No registration is required, and all ages may attend these events. Free popcorn and water are available while supplies last.

Garland Police Officer Teaches Preschoolers about Community Helpers at Garland Library

Preschoolers ages three to five can learn about community helpers and meet a real Garland police officer at the North Garland Branch Library’s Preschool Storytime—Friday, March 16 at 11 a.m.

Children attending this event will learn about what police officers do and how they help people in the community. The officer will read a book to the kids, then give them a tour of a patrol car. The children will also get to make their own police caps.

Kids Create “Scribbles” at Garland Library

Children practice their STEAM art skills by making scribbles at Art Explorers, a monthly program for children ages 6 through 12 presented by the Nicholson Memorial Library System. The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at the Walnut Creek Branch Library.

Children attending Art Explorers learn about different types of art, then use their new skills to create their own masterpieces. Attendees at the March event will learn to look for art everywhere, even in “scribbles.” Their art pieces will consist of continuous lines of scribbles, made without lifting their markers from their papers. Once participants finish their scribble lines, they will identify shapes and patterns within their abstract pieces and color them with markers.

Registration is required to attend each Art Explorer program and is limited to 24 participants. Registration may be completed by phone or in person at the Walnut Creek Branch Library beginning Saturday, Feb. 17. The Walnut Creek Branch Library is located at 3319 Edgewood Drive, in Garland. Celtic Music Comes to Garland Library

Seniors may enjoy traditional Celtic music in honor of St. Patrick’s Day as the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents Irish Rogues at Senior Social Hour. The group appears at 2 p.m., on Thursday, March 8, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

The Irish Rogues are an authentic Celtic/Irish band that performs a rich collection of energetic sing-alongs, ballads, and Celtic folk music. The band plays at venues throughout the DFW Metroplex, including in pubs and at libraries.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55 years of age and older. Donations of gently-used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted at the program. No registration is required to attend the event, but seats do fill up quickly. Garland Library Hosts Stargazing Event

Explore the cosmos this spring with a stargazing event presented by the Nicholson Memorial Library System from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at the South Garland Branch Library

At the event, staff will identify specific objects in the night sky, such as bright stars, constellations, and planets for attendees to view. Participants will also access star map applications on tablets and smartphones to pinpoint additional objects. The library will provide a limited number of tablets to be used at this event, and patrons are encouraged to bring their own smartphones or tablets.

Due to weather conditions, this event is subject to change and/or cancellation. The event is open to adults ages 18 and older. Children may attend with an adult. Garland Library Hosts Brain Awareness Events

We all know brain health is important. Learn how to keep yourself healthy and your brain fit at the Nicholson Memorial Library’s Brain Awareness Month events.

The first event, held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20 at the South Garland Branch Library will feature a guest speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Dallas. The program, “Healthy Living For Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research’” will provide insights on how to optimize both physical and cognitive health through diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, and social engagement.

The second event takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the Central Library, and consists of an introduction and interactive tutorial on BrainHQ, the library’s online brain training resource. Patrons will learn how to download the app, set up an account, and be walked through the various games and features. Attendees can bring their own devices or use one of the Library’s iPads or laptops. Registration is required and is limited to 25 patrons.
