Updates December 2016

Garland’s Eastern Hills Country Club property remains in the ownership of Victor Ballas since area residents successfully opposed development. Many nearby homeowners are using the cart trails as walking paths. Photos have been taken of wildcats and other animals now inhabiting the dense overgrowth. Stephen Stanley, 3rd District Councilman, tells us that steps are being taken to change mowing requirements from 50 feet to 100 feet from the periphery.

We visited our favorite Mexican restaurant, Masaryk, locate at Broadway and Centerville and were surprised to find them closed and under remodeling. A workman on the premises told us that the restaurant will reopen in January under the same ownership.  It will reopen as a seafood restaurant, and we understood him to say its new name will be “Fat Fish”. It’s very possible that we misunderstood him.

The Rustic Ranch Grill at Broadway and Colonel also closed its doors in December. They were apparently unable to generate enough business to support the restaurant.

A newly opened Mexican restaurant is Los Reales Bar & Restaurant at 142 E. Centerville Road, formerly The Thirsty Bird, and Eddie’s Sports Bar before that. This new dining spot is offering free beer while awaiting their TABC license to sell alcoholic beverages. On a follow-up visit we found this restaurant closed once again. There were signs indicating that it will be reopening soon.

Village 1It’s been exciting to watch the brick walls rising at what will soon become The Village of Rowlett. It won’t be long before residents will occupy the 460 dwelling units in the development. The location, on Main Street across the street from the DART station, is ideal for commuters. We were told that there is a waiting list for residential occupancy, but some commercial spaces are still available.
