Clothing Recycling Competition to Benefit Garland Elementary Schools

clothing-driveUnwanted clothing and shoes piling up? Mark your calendars for an opportunity to clean house while supporting a great cause. Garland Environmental Waste Services (EWS) invites the community to bag their unwanted textiles and bring them to the Recycling Drop-Off Center, 1426 Commerce St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19.

When dropping off donations, participants are encouraged tell EWS staff which Garland elementary school they’d like to support with their donation. The elementary school that collects the most material by weight will be awarded a check from World Wear Project.

Clothing, shoes, backpacks, caps, hats, pots, pans, purses and stuffed animals will be accepted. Material does not have to be in pristine condition. For example, clothing with holes or stains may be turned into oil rags. Transparent bags are preferred, as they are less likely to be confused with trash. Hangers should be removed to ensure they do not tear the bags. EWS staff will be available to help unload bags.

The Clothing Recycling Competition will celebrate America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful. More than 50 percent of unwanted textiles in the U.S. are sent to the landfill, taking up almost 5 percent of landfill space. Through donating clothes, residents help free up space in the landfill, reduce their carbon footprint and extend the life of materials.
