Election Day, May 7

This year Garland voters will be given a ballot that looks a bit abbreviated, as there will be no mention of the Mayor or City Council. There are no challengers for the mayoral position or the 8 Council seats.

GISD-logoThere are challengers for 3 of the 7 School Board places. Since GISD covers Rowlett schools as well as Garland’s, the outcome will affect both municipalities. Perhaps the most controversial of the challengers is Jody Luna, sister in law to Scott Luna, who, we are told, is serving his last year on the Board. Nevertheless, are 2 members of the same family good for a 7 member board. The luna family has served on the School Board for generations and their name is on one of our elementary schools. Jody is considered highly qualified and has 3 children attending GISD elementary, middle and high schools. She has also been a very active PTA member and as such in touch with current issues affecting our schools. Jody Luna is challenging Linda Griffin, who has served in place 3 for more than 2 decades.

Among the 4 challengers for Place 4 is the only Hispanic in the race, Jose Flores, who is an attorney underwriter. Also competing for place 4 are Jed Reed, Wes Johnson, and Michael Latham. Other Challengers are Johnny Beach and Rob Mc Angus are challenging Charles Axe for place 2.

Those elected to the GISD School Board will participate in the allocation of funds resulting from the bond issue. They will have a profound affect on the future of our school system and should be chosen wisely.
