October 1    “A Night of Wind Quartets” Benefit Concert

7 p.m.    Plaza Theatre

“A Night of Wind Quartets” features four brass quartets performing to benefit the Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society (www.DAPS.us). The quartets include tuba quartet (premiering Sy Brandon’s Emoticons) “The Tarnished Brass,” trombone quartet “Graham’s Trombones,” saxophone quartet “Sax on the Side,” and horn quartet “Les Quatres Cors.” Tickets will be available at the door: $10 for adults, and $5 for children under 12 and students.


October 4    “Breakdown 2 Breakthrough

2 p.m.    Plaza Theatre

K.J Productions presents a dramatic monologue production of eight courageous women telling their stories of life’s ups and downs, trials and tribulations. Have you ever wondered why someone is the way that they are? Have you questioned their reactions to a situation? Their performances give positive messages about ethics, remaining true to yourself, friendship, love and loss without being preachy or trite. Oct. 7-Nov.1   Sarah King’s Art Exhibit

Granville Arts Center – Gallery Space

Sarah King presents portraits of Biblical characters including, Moses, Ruth and Naomi, among others. This exhibit is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. and during performances at the Granville Arts Center – Gallery Space. Admission is free and open to the public.


October 9-10   “Set a Fire DFW

Granville Arts Center – Brownlee Auditorium

Reality Community presents “Set a Fire DFW,” a three meeting worship event, spanning two days and featuring guest speaker Dutch Sheets (international author of “Intercessory Prayer”), Corey Russell (IHOP-KC), Leeland (Grammy nominated worship band), and Klaus (former director of worship at Christ for the Nations Institute). Registration is $30 until September 9, and $40 afterwards. Meeting times are 7 p.m. each evening (October 9 and 10), with an additional 1:30 p.m. meeting on October 10. Tickets: SetAFireDFW.com. October 10   “Ava’s Loudest Laugh Comedy/Variety Show”

3 p.m.    Plaza Theatre

“Ava’s Loudest Laugh Comedy/Variety Show” presents a show flavored with all sorts of performers, from song and dance to comedy and a live band. Even the audience gets in on the act, as Ava interacts and gives audience members chances to win prizes. October 11    “Broken”

3 p.m.    Granville Arts Center – Brownlee Auditroium

Visual Teaching from Genesis to Revelation presents “Broken,” a modern-day rendition of the Prodigal Son parable, a story of unconditional love and forgiveness. Visual Teaching from Genesis to Revelation aims at educating its members by illustrating Biblical passages through performing arts. October 15-November 7 “Mrs. California” by Garland Civic Theatre

Granville Arts Center – Small Theatre

Garland Civic Theatre presents the brightly satiric comedy, “Mrs. California,” by Doris Baizley. It pokes wicked good fun at the pretentious hokum of a hotly contested homemakers’ competition. This production will run Fridays and Saturdays, October 16-November 7, 2015 at 8 p.m. with Sunday performances on October 18 and 25, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. There is a Thursday performance on October 15, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $22 at GarlandArtsBoxOffice.com or 972-205-2790.


October 16   G.S.O. presents pianist Jan Jiracek

8 p.m.    Granville Arts Center – Brownlee Auditorium

This season, the Garland Symphony Orchestra will explore masterpieces inspired by visions of riches. From Auber’s “Overture to The Crown Diamonds” to Lehar’s “Gold and Silver Waltz,” it promises to be a glittering array of musical treasures. October 22-25   “Young Frankenstein” by C.O.R.P.

Plaza Theatre

Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked side-kick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. October 30   Free Movie “Dracula” 

7 p.m.    Plaza Theatre

Classic horror film legend Bela Lugosi stars in the vampire film that started it all, 1931’s “Dracula,” based on the frightening Bram Stoker story about a shape-shifting bloodsucker who terrorizes those who invite his presence.  Admission is free and open to the public. Popcorn, candy, soda and water are available for $2 each. Garlic and crucifixes will not be provided.


Oct.30-Nov.1   “A Wretch Like Me” by Puritan Productions

Granville Arts Center – Brownlee Auditorium

“A Wretch Like Me: The Story of ‘Amazing Grace” is a classical presentation of drama, with ballet and chorus based on the life of John Newton (1725-1807), who was an Anglican clergyman and former slave ship master. It took him a long time to speak out against the Slave Trade, but he had an influence on many young evangelical Christians, particularly William Wilberforce, the abolitionist.  John Newton is perhaps best known as the author of the world-famous hymn, “Amazing Grace,” written in collaboration with William Cowper.
