Tweens Discover Egyptology at Garland Libraries

Tweens interested in Egyptology and hieroglyphics should fit right in at Tween Scene, a program series from the Nicholson Memorial Library System specially designed for youth ages 10 through 13. Tween Scene consists of activities related to fun and interesting themes. Participants also receive book recommendations based on each theme. The program takes place twice a month at various library locations on Thursday afternoons and evenings.

The October Tween Scene events, titled Read like an Egyptian, focus on ancient Egypt. Attendees may hear about Egypt-related books and make their own hieroglyphs out of sandpaper. The first Tween Scene takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, at the South Garland Branch Library, with the second occurring at 4 p.m. on Oct. 9, at the North Garland Branch Library.

Kids Learn Watercolor Techniques at Garland Library

Children with an interest in painting can discover watercolor art at Art Explorers, a monthly program series for children ages 6 through 12 presented by the Nicholson Memorial Library System. The event takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Walnut Creek Branch Library.

Children attending Art Explorers can learn about different types of art, then use their new skills to create their own masterpieces. At the October event, participants may study the art of children’s book authors like Maurice Sendak and learn basic watercolor techniques to use in their own pictures.

Registration is required to attend each Art Explorer program and is limited to 30 participants. Registration may be completed by phone or in person at the Walnut Creek Branch Library beginning two weeks prior to each event.

Families Can Enjoy Free Movies at the Library

Bring a blanket and attend free movies with your family. The Nicholson Memorial Library System is hosting the following family movie times in October.

Doors open 15 minutes prior to each event. Seating is limited. No registration is required, and all ages may attend these events. Free popcorn and water are available while supplies last.

Joe Trevino Serenades Senior Social Hour

Enjoy popular songs of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s performed by musician Joe Trevino. Mr. Trevino appears at the Nicholson Memorial Library’s Senior Social Hour at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

Mr. Trevino serves as the house musician at the Chocolate Angel, a tea room in Plano, where he sings and plays acoustic guitar. Mr. Trevino maintains a large repertoire of popular tunes from the 1960s to the 1980s and may take requests during this hour-long concert.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55 years of age and older. Donations of gently used books and media for the Friends of the Library book sale will be accepted during the program. No registration is required to attend the event, but seats do fill up quickly. Doors open 30 minutes prior to performance.

Kids Create Puppets at Garland Library’s Books and Beyond

Children ages 6 through 12 have the opportunity to create their own puppets at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Books and Beyond. The event takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Central Library.

Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to monthly themes. Children use their imaginations to explore those themes and complete activities, all while socializing with others their age and having fun.

At the October program, attendees may develop their storytelling skills by creating puppets to help them tell stories. Several different styles of puppets can be made, including canvas and paper puppets. Once the puppets are constructed, participants can present their stories on a puppet stage.

No registration is required to attend this free event. Children must be aged 6 through 12 to attend.

Library’s Book Discussion Group Explores a City of Women

The Page Turners, the Library’s book discussion group, will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., in Downtown Garland.

The group will discuss City of Women, by David Gillham. At first glance, Sigrid Schröder is a typical German wife during the Second World War. She goes to work in Berlin, stretches her rations as far as they will go, and cares for her mother-in-law while trying to ignore the war. Yet this is only one side of Sigrid. She has secrets, including her affair with a Jewish man. As the war continues, Sigrid finds it harder to reconcile her two lives and wonders what she will do when she is caught between them.
